Book Review: Tales from the Trips

This post is written by one of our favorite dad bloggers, Chris aka @tessasdad/@bookdads and cross posted from bookdads.com.

About the author: John Cave Osborne spent ten successful years in the financial services industry before leaving the white-collar world to pursue his dream of being a writer. In 2003, that dream was put on hold when he started a stone countertop company with his sister-in-law. Now, with the business up and running, John has been able to once again focus on writing – this time by authoring a memoir of his lightning-quick journey from bachelorhood to a married father of four. Tales from the Trips is his first book.

One of the things I enjoy most about being a dad blogger is that I’ve been able to connect and develop friendships with dads from all over the world. One of the dads I connected with early on in my blogging was John Cave Osborne, through his blog, And Triplets Make Six. Right around that time, I saw this video on You Tube:

After watching this video, my first thought was: I just witnessed the parenting of a domestic god. I ran and got my wife to show her this video. We thought we had it rough being first-time parents in our mid-30’s (and beyond) to one baby. John Cave Osborne became my new idol.

In all seriousness though, I knew I had to get my hands on this book when it came out. I was very excited when I got the book (and saw John had signed it for me). My wife and I read it at the same time. She was done before me – I take forever to read a book – and we both reached the same conclusion upon finishing it: BRAVO!

Tales from the Trips is the tale of the Osborne family’s journey from first hearing Caroline’s news about the pregnancy to the birth of the trips (and ensuing chaos which comes with adding three babies to your life and home), all the way up to the trips learning how to walk. Throughout the book, John’s writing and storytelling displays a powerful sense of honesty and sincerity. Through this approach, which I found not only endearing, but also refreshing to see from a dad, John expresses his fears, his sense of humor and an obvious deep-felt love for his family, children and fatherhood.

Although I have no idea how I would handle being in John’s shoes, I do know from reading Tales from the Trips what I would need to manage. Whether it’s from being a first-time parent at a more “mature” age (something I can relate with), John’s outlook and approach to parenting and fatherhood is incredibly admirable. His excellent sense of humor (and his wife Caroline’s for that matter as well) is definitely a necessary and vital tool for his parenting “tool belt.”

Although I have sent our local parents of multiples group information about how to get their hands on Tales from the Trips, I don’t think this book appeals exclusively to parents of multiples or parents in general. Because of who John is as a person and how we get to know him throughout our reading of the book, I look at this book as not only a memoir about parenting, but also a book about manhood in general. I strongly believe that John can not only be admired for his parenting, but also for being the kind of man we can all look up to.

As further incentive to purchase this book, John will donate 30% of the net revenue to Child Help (an organization dedicated to ending child abuse). John and I share the same passions regarding this cause. I hope you will not only purchase the book, but learn more about how you can help put an end to child abuse in your community.
